Psychology

"Healing does not mean forgetting what happened. It means learning how to carry your experiences in a healthier, more manageable way."

New Light Psychology LLC was founded in Bucks County, PA to provide compassionate mental health care for individuals navigating some of life's most difficult emotional experiences. We understand that people in high-stress professions often spend so much time caring for others that their own mental health becomes easily overlooked.

Dr. Newman's approach is grounded in empathy, clinical expertise, and practical strategies that help clients build resilience, improve overall wellbeing, and reconnect with a sense of purpose and balance.

Meet Dr. Newman

Experienced · Empathetic · Evidence-Based

Kara Newman, Ph.D., founded New Light Psychology LLC in January 2025 and is an experienced clinical psychologist in Pennsylvania. Her online therapy practice provides research-supported therapy approaches for those affected by traumatic loss, PTSD, anxiety, and workplace stress. She also offers culturally-informed grief therapy to the bereaved, designed to support any individual from any faith background. As a grief and trauma therapist with addictions expertise, Dr. Newman is especially committed to serving first responders and community public servants in the Bucks County area, including police, fire, EMS, and healthcare roles in Newtown, Langhorne, and greater Philadelphia.

Dr. Newman found her life's calling while working in public service for nearly 8 years with the Department of Veterans Affairs, providing PTSD-focused clinical services and grief therapy to military Veterans of the Vietnam War and post-9/11 (OEF/OIF/OND) GWOT combat eras. During this time, she was promoted into leadership and professional consultation roles, including Clinical Lead of a VA Medical Center's substance use treatment clinic and Assistant Director of a psychology pre-doctoral internship training program.

Dr. Newman obtained her bachelor’s degree in neuroscience at Trinity College, during a rewarding NCAA collegiate ice hockey career. She relocated to Philadelphia to complete her master’s degree and Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Drexel University. She has been licensed in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for more than 10 years. Prior to beginning her career as a full-time therapist, Dr. Newman held research positions at the University of Pennsylvania Treatment Research Center and the University of Connecticut Health Center, where she studied early life trauma and abuse, HIV/AIDS, and addictive behaviors. She is a published author in these areas.

With over a decade in practice, Dr. Newman has developed additional clinical expertise in suicide prevention education, gambling treatment, and employee EAP services. Today, she recognizes the deep challenges of maintaining a workplace culture of strength while experiencing unspoken emotional pain. Her treatment framework encourages small changes toward healthier coping, while strengthening the close relationships and human connections that make life worth living.

Grief Therapy

“Your absence has gone through me like thread through a needle. Everything I do is stitched with its color.” -Separation, W.S. Merwin

It’s difficult to describe the life-altering landscape of a death, and sometimes even harder to get others to understand the true magnitude of your loss. You may feel hopeless, fighting an unwinnable battle to “get over” unbearable pain. There is a different option. New Light Psychology offers grief therapy to adapt to the reality of what has happened, even if you struggle to accept it. Envision a way forward that makes room for grief and honors the unbreakable connection that remains after a loved one's passing.

Trauma & PTSD

Traumatic experiences can leave lasting effects, changing a person’s life and worldview in an instant. Police, firefighters, paramedics, and healthcare workers routinely face trauma exposure as an occupational stressor. Dr. Newman provides trauma-focused therapy to first responder populations, military members and their families, and survivors of events including sexual assault, traumatic loss, and childhood abuse.

Not ready for a long-term commitment? Consider this: two of the most effective PTSD therapy treatments can be completed in a brief episode, lasting 12 sessions (or less) over about 3 months.

Anxiety & Panic Disorder

Constant worry, racing thoughts, panic attacks, and chronic stress can feel exhausting. Part of the solution is gaining skills to manage these reactions when they occur, but the real breakthroughs come from understanding what fuels your anxiety, and learning ways to disrupt it at the source.

New Light Psychology treats a range of anxiety concerns including panic attacks, social anxiety, agoraphobia, performance anxiety, and other phobias that negatively impact a person's ability to experience and enjoy life. Avoiding what makes you anxious may bring short-term relief, but therapy can empower you to make a lasting change!

We can help you achieve your recovery goals, whether they are to reduce your use, stop your use, or better understand the patterns holding you back from a healthier life.
